Where Coast & Moors meet...

On the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park, The Grapes sits alongside the main A171 route to Whitby in the tiny hamlet of Scaling. Once a nineteenth century staging post on the old coach route across the moors the inn now provides a friendly welcome and old-fashioned Yorkshire hospitality to the modern traveller. Whether for an overnight rest on your journey or a short break of a few or more days, you can be sure of a pleasant and refreshing stay at the Grapes.
The inn, a Grade II listed building, has seen many changes since the coaching days and now provides all the conveniences today's visitor requires.

Traditional style surroundings full of character and its unique location offering magnificent views across open water to the wild moorland beyond, are to be savoured. Inside The Grapes, stone-built to keep out the winter winds, you'll find the warmth and welcoming atmosphere of a traditional rural hostelry.

Being only 12 miles from the ancient port of Whitby and almost the same from Guisborough, The Grapes is an ideal centre for exploring the wild moorland and majestic coastline of this most beautiful part of the north-east of England. legend and folklore abound here and you'll find smuggling haunts, tiny fishing villages, spectacular sea cliffs, wooded valleys and the wilderness of the moorland tops all within just a few miles journey.

Colour TV and a hospitality tray complete the delightful accommodation facilities designed to put you at ease and provide just the right relaxing atmosphere for your stay.

Choose the coast and you'll discover sandy beaches and the highest sea-cliffs on England's east coast; look inland and the largest expanse of heather moorland in the country is there to explore.

Market towns and tiny fishing villages clinging to the cliff-sides, offer a taste of tradition. Guisborough's colourful market and ruined Priory are worth a visit, and Saltburn offers a walk back in time to Victorian splendour. This is "Heartbeat Country" and children of all ages will remember a nostalgic ride on the nearby North Yorkshire Moors Railway through 18 miles of breathtaking countryside.

Smuggling abounded here during the 18th century and more than likely even The Grapes was supplied with goods brought in from Europe by the free-traders of Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby and Saltburn, where you can relive those dark contraband days in the Saltburn Smugglers Heritage Centre.

Whitby, a fishing and whaling port since the Middle Ages, now has more modern holiday pursuits - but here still stands the magnificent Abbey ruins and the 199 steps up to it! Bram Stoker drew inspiration for his novel "Dracula" here and an air of mystery still surrounds much of the town.

This too is "Captain Cook Country" and there is much to remind visitors of the great explorer and navigator who was born and lived here. Follow the Cook Country Tour from The Grapes to take in many of the places associated with his early life.

With Scaling Reservoir just a few yards from your room at The Grapes, fishing and sailing in season can be easily arranged. Ornithologists, too, can enjoy the varied birdlife that surrounds the waterside and moors beyond.
