In the 19th century this pretty Swaledale village dominated by an unusually large, sloping green was an important centre of the lead mining industry.
Today it is a hub for tourism and its Swaledale Folk Museum attracts many visitors wishing to learn more about Dales’ history and culture.

In a small shelter near the green local people meet each year to stage a special parliament where they are allowed to give vent to their opinions. St. Andrew’s Church is one of several ecclesiastical buildings known as the ‘cathedral of the Dales’. It was built by monks who came from Bridlington in the 12th century.
