Rosedale sits in one of
the prettiest valleys in the North York Moors
but during the 19th century it was a veritable
hive of industry, its population multiplying
after the discovery of high-grade iron ore
sparked a mini-Klondike. Mines were pushed
deep in to the bowels of the valley’s
hillsides and the North Eastern Railway
Company seized the opportunity to build a new
line. Kilns can still be seen but stones from
the walls of 12th century Rosedale Abbey were
pilfered to build houses for the miners, so
little remains of the original nunnery. |
