The village of Glaisdale
was once an important location for the mining
of ironstone but it is more famous for
Beggar’s Bridge, a packhorse bridge over the
turbulent River Esk. The story goes that it
was built by one-time beggar Tom Ferris who
was unable to cross the river to go 'a-courtin’.
After making his fortune in the navy he
returned home to erect the bridge. |
