visit to Ripley is complete without sampling
the delights of The Old Farmyard. Clydesdale
heavy horses are bred on the farm.
Hens and chickens roam freely in the
farmyard, piglets can be seen in
the pigsty.
There are also several breeds of sheep along
with lambs that can be bottle-fed. |

The Birchwood Farm museum, within the farmyard
contains various farming items from days gone
by. Including dairy equipment, old farm tools, a
stone grinding mill & household objects all
collected by the Smith family that have had the
farm in Ripley since 1865. Demonstrations of
rope making & butter making take place most
weekends. The Old Farmyard is
open every Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday from
Easter Sunday until the last bank holiday in
August. Open at 12.00 Noon - Closes at 5.00pm.
There is also a special Christmas nativity
opening, please contact us for the exact date as
this changes each year.
Small admission charge. Parties booked at other
times. Horse and trap ride round Ripley village
when available.

50 acres of mysterious, weird and wonderful rock
formations carved out of sandstone by the
elements. Now under protection of the National
Trust. An information centre has been opened

Spectacular limestone gorge with a chasm nearly
70ft deep. Winding footpaths along the side and

Natural dry stream passage formed some half
million years ago with stalagmite and stalactite
formations. Found by lead miners in the 19th
century and now opened as a show cave. Also,

Heritage Walks

one of the Heritage Walks in Nidderdale, area of
outstanding natural beauty.

walks are available from the Tourist Information
Centre's in Harrogate, Knaresborough & Ripon.

Gouthwaite Reservoir
(birdwatching)
Particularly popular location for bird watchers
and it is noted county wide for hosting birds of
prey and a variety of waders.
Gouthwaite can be found in Upper Nidderdale - 5
minute drive from Pateley Bridge.

Hackfall Wood
(birdwatching)
Near Grewelthorpe is particularly good in spring
for woodland birds, including the rarer species
such as woodcock, pied flycatcher, wood warbler
and the lesser spotted woodpecker. Grewelthorpe
is located in between Ripon and Masham.

The Nidderdale Moors
(birdwatching)
The Nidderdale Moors are designated as a Special
Protection Area support nationally important
populations of Golden Plover, Lapwing and Red
Grouse.

The Stray
Harrogate
This 200 acres of land wraps around the main
urban "old town" and is fiercely guarded by
residents with a group set up specifically to
safeguard it. The Stray exists for the people of
the town and is a popular spot for picnicking,
kite-flying, outdoor games and local football
matches on Sunday mornings.

Ripon Spa Gardens
Park Street, Ripon
Spa Gardens is a beautiful park right in the
heart of Ripon with something for everyone. As
well as proudly flying the Green Flag for the
fourth year running, the Gardens also boast
Ripon's war memorial, which has taken the Best
War memorial in the "town class" several times
in the Yorkshire In Bloom awards and a splendid
Victorian bandstand where band concerts take
place on Sunday afternoons throughout the
summer. For birdwatchers, carefully sited
nesting boxes have encouraged many varieties to
make a home in the Gardens alongside outdoor
games and the Sun Parlour Café serving home
cooked food.

The Recreation Ground
Pateley Bridge
This area of open green space with many mature
trees runs alongside the River Nidd where you
will see a wonderful array of daffodils in the
spring. There are small areas of shrub plantings
and the cenotaph has seasonal bedding planted
round it throughout the year. A walk through the
village of Pateley Bridge treats the visitor to
a colourful abundance of seasonal bedding.

Killinghall Moor Country
Park
Harrogate
A country park of around twenty-five acres
popular with wildlife enthusiasts. This park
differs from our district's other parks, as
there are no formal planting schemes.
Killinghall Moor is a conservation area, where
visitors can enjoy the beauty of our native
birds and wildlife.

One of Yorkshire's most relaxing yet inspiring
locations! Beautiful 58-acre gardens which have,
for over 50 years, provided a garden setting to
assess the suitability of plants for growing in
the north. Breathtaking streamside, flower and
vegetable trial, woodland and arboretum, scented
garden, herbs and ornamental grasses....to name
but a few. Harlow Carr is the location for the
exciting landmark BBC series 'Gardens through
Time', to mark the bicentenary of the RHS in
2004. The gardens also run workshops on all
aspects of gardening and horticulture, plus
events.
