The visitor centre was opened in 1988 by Dame
Margot Fonteyn de Arias the then Chancellor of
the university. It provides an exhibition hall,
coffee shop and plant sales. The coffee shop
offers a wide selection of hot and cold drinks,
and light snacks, and there is an extensive
range of gifts and souvenirs. The plant sale has
a selection of herb's, alpines and unusual
plants, many of which can be found around the
garden. During the year, the centre is the venue
for talks and seminars on a variety of
horticultural subjects, and a showcase for the
work of local artists and photographers.

The herb patch is a small herb nursery producing
a wide range of culinary, medicinal and aromatic
herb plants. All grown without the use of
artificial pesticides, in organic, peat free
compost. In the Farm Shop you will find a
selection of locally produced fine foods
including herb jellies, dips, organic
vegetables, preserves, chutneys, cakes, honey
and apple juice. Choose from a range of gifts
including hand crafted soap, aromatherapy
products, cards and many more. After browsing
around the nursery, a warm welcome awaits in our

drive, orienteering course, forest and riverside
walks, visitor centre/forest shop, tea shop and

Derwent Valley Country
Park
12 mile walk along former railway in the Derwent
Valley from Swalwell Visitor Centre near the
centre of Tyneside to Lydgett's Junction,
Consett. Includes Thornley Woodland Centre near
Winlaton Mill, picnic areas at Rowlands Gill,
Ebchester and Shotley Bridge.
