A crowd of twentieth
century "groundlings" stands in the open yard
of the new Globe Theatre in Bankside, London.
Admission is £5.00; in the early 1600's, at
the first Globe Theatre, Shakespeare's "Wooden
O," groundlings (commoners) paid one English
penny.

Famed for it's musical productions such as;
Evita and Chicago. The current Adelphi Theatre
is noted for being designed in a modernist
1930's art deco style. When it opened it was
described as being designed with a complete
absence of curves. Externally and internally the
entire conception is carried out in straight
lines and angles, the angle of thirty-two
degrees being used as the master note. This
'straight-line' design is most noticeable from
the outside by the glazed window looking out
from the Dress Circle bar area onto the street,
directly above the theatre's canopy and,
internally, by the line of the front of the two
circles and side boxes. The current show,
Chicago The Musical - also a revival - opened in
November 1997 and will take over from Me and My
Girl to become The Adelphi Theatre's longest
running show in October 2005!

The Carling Academy in Brixton was built in 1929
and is the largest of the four 'Astoria'
theatres. Designed by EA Stone the Brixton
Academy was considered the finest venue in the
country for showing motion pictures. The
impressive and distinctive building boasts a
superb Art Deco interior and an elaborate
proscenium arch over the stage. The main
entrance features a thirty-five foot semi dome
finished in copper and bronze. The ribs of the
semi dome have been adorned with neon. A forty
foot advertising panel was fitted with
interchangeable illuminated letters. The
interior of the buildings roof was painted to
look like the sky- the design brief was to
create a building that gave the impression of
being open-air. Acts such as 'The Clash', 'Dire
Straights' and 'The Police' have played here. In
recent years the Brixton Academy has been fully
refurbished and is once again considered one of
the premier live music venues in the country.

Built on the site of a former factory, it opened
in 1927 as a cinema. However, it was converted
for theatrical use in 1976 and is now
exclusively a music venue with a capacity of
2,000. The building that houses the London
Astoria was originally built as a pickle factory
for food producers Crosse and Blackwell. Before
becoming a music venue the London Astoria has
played many roles in the history of the West
End. The buildings first venture into the world
of entertainment was as a variety club for men-
complete with nude dancing. Though reasonable
successful, the site was so well located that it
became apparent that the venue could cater to a
broader audience and was refurbished as a music
hall. The venue then became synonymous with
television broadcasts. The Sky television show
'The Happening' was the first show to be
recorded here. All round music enthusiast Jools
Holland recorded his 'Jukebox Jury' show here at
the Astoria. Within the last two decades the
London Astoria has evolved into an exclusive
live music and club venue. 'Nirvana', 'Black
Sabbath', 'Prince', 'Eminem' and 'The White
Stripes' are among the acts to have played here
and large scale acts continue to perform here.
In 1992 a poll conducted by music journal the
'NME' saw the London Astoria voted the nations
second favourite music venue. High praise
indeed. In 2002 the Astoria was acquired by
'Mean Fiddler' who promise to uphold the venues
rich traditions and continue to draw the worlds
finest Rock acts. The venue plays host to the
popular nightclub G-A-Y, which sees many
celebrities visit and perform music for the
assembled crowd.

Lord's has long been seen as the 'Home of

historical. In practice it remains, to this day,
perhaps the most important single place in world
cricket. Its owner, Marylebone Cricket Club,
remains the guardian of both the Laws and the
Spirit of Cricket, and MCC sides (which play
around 500 games a year) perform a key role in
promoting cricket - in Britain and elsewhere. In
addition, Lord's is the home of Middlesex County
Cricket Club and the England & Wales Cricket
Board as well as the European Cricket Council.
It is also the setting for the state-of-the-art
MCC Indoor Cricket School, the unrivalled MCC

course, the Ashes urn. Above all, Lord's is the

The area of Twickenham is documented as far back
as 700 AD and the name itself is of Anglo-Saxon
origins. The Twickenham Rugby Football Club is
one of a handful of clubs that can trace its
history back as far as the formation of Rugby
itself. Twickenham was the venue for England's
international Rugby games since 1910. The museum
within its grounds is worth the visit in itself,
containing many interactive features and charts
the entire history of the ground and of English
Rugby- culminating in England 2004 World Cup
victory. A tour of the ground is also available
and enables visitors to enter the players
changing rooms and to take the legendary journey
through the tunnel to the magnificent pitch!

Opened in 1870 - Currently showing, 'Stomp' is a
movement, of bodies, objects, sounds - even
abstract ideas. But what makes it so appealing
is that the cast uses everyday objects, but in
non-traditional ways.
