Bansko is a small town located in southern Bulgaria, the old town of Bansko can trace it’s recorded history back to 1576 though it is possible there has been a thriving settlement at the location for many years before this.
Bansko is situated 925 metres above sea level and is just 160 km from Bulgaria’s capital city “Sofia”. Bansko has a long and illustrious history, first as a centre for crafts and during the 18th and 19th centuries when merchants firmly established Bansko as a trade centre between the Aegean Sea and Central Europe. As a consequence Bansko grew into a centre for culture and fine arts.Many famous people in the history of Bulgaria hail from Bansko including, Paisii of Hilendar, Neofit Rilski, and Toma Vishanov-Molera the founder of the “Bansko School of Painting”. Many of the works of art from the school survive in the town.
The traditional architecture of Bansko really is breathtaking and it is a pleasure to wander around the town and marvel at the beauty and serenity of the town. Many of the houses have been declared “architectural monuments” so as to preserve their beauty for generations to come.

The ski area of Bansko is located on the Pirin. Mountain range the largest peak being Vihren which dominates the town and climbs to a height of 2,914 metres above sea level. The actual ski area is located between 2,600 metres and 990 metres above sea level. Bansko currently boasts 65 kilometres of pistes served by the latest Dopplemayer lifts including a high speed 8 man gondola. The longest ski run is 7km in length and Bansko also offers night skiing for the enthusiast that just keeps going.
The ski area of Bansko is developing at an extremely fast pace and new pistes are opened each year. It is not surprising as Bansko offers the best snow record in Bulgaria and probably the most varied skiing in Bulgaria, from wide gently sloping pistes for the novice, to the fast, steep and challenging runs for the expert. The development of Bansko’s pistes is with an eye to competition racing with Bansko surely set to play a major part in Bulgaria’s bid for the “2014 winter Olympics”.
