Suffolk - Castles, Cathedrals, Monuments,
Stately Homes & Palaces

Since the stone age, man has been creating majestic structures that we still marvel at today.

Whether you are interested in ancient monuments, battlefield sites, re-enactments, Roman and Norman forts and castles, Stately Homes, Country Houses, Historic Cathedrals, Ruined Abbeys etc, this is the page that should give you the information you need.

Here we try to list properties in private ownership but open to the public (even if only occasionally) as well as those in the care of the National Trust or English/Scottish Heritage.

We know that not all the properties in Suffolk are listed.

Please help us make this guide comprehensive by giving details of missing attractions here.

For almost 1,000 years the site of Suffolk's Cathedral has been one of worship and pilgrimage. A Norman abbey was built to house the remains of the martyred monarch Edmund, King of the East Angles. In the twelfth century, Abbot Anselm built an additional church for pilgrims to the Abbey, dedicated it to St. James. The nave of today's church is the successor of that church. Little remains of the Benedictine Abbey, as the Church continued to grow over the centuries, until 1914 when St. James' became the Cathedral church of the Diocese of Saint Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Today the Cathedral is open to visitors all year round from 7.30am to 6.00pm.
