Matlock and its sister town of Matlock Bath are almost two towns in one situated on the banks of the River Derwent. Between them they have some of the Peak District’s most remarkable attractions, from gorgeous scenery to a number of attractive museums. While the former spa town of Matlock is Derbyshire’s county town, its smaller neighbour Matlock Bath is a popular tourism ‘resort’ which originally developed around its warm springs. Within these areas you will find Riber Castle and the astonishing Heights of Abraham; take a cable car to go high above the Derwent Valley, or brace yourself for a visit to subterranean show caves.

Just three miles away is the village of Cromford where a cotton-spinning mill was established by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1771. He enlarged the village to house his burgeoning workforce. The mill and its machinery have survived in working order and form part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
