Reading

Camping and Touring Van Parks for walkers on The Thames Path.

The towns shown on the left are in the same order as they appear on the Route page. Select the one in which you would like to find a campsite or pitch for a motorhome or touring van.

At the meeting point of the River Thames and River Kennet is the considerable sized town of Reading. In other areas of the country it would have been considered a city because of its size, but is has an Abbey and no Cathedral, so could not gain a royal charter. Whilst in Reading you can visit the Abbey Ruins and Forbury gardens.

The town is well placed for visiting the Chiltern Hills, Berkshire Downs and the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty and the road network will quickly take you of the centre for you to visit these areas. It has a notable sized shopping centre with two indoor shopping areas of some repute and main streets that have well-known departments stores. There are all the bars, restaurants and bistros you would expect too, all within easy walking distance.

There are lots of things to do both in Reading and out of it - Basildon Park is not too far away - a gorgeous Palladian mansion with lovely parkland and about four miles from the centre is Mapledurham House and Watermill. The village of Malpledurham is picturesque with its Mill, cottages and almshouses and you can still buy the mill's flour. The popular Reading music festivals take place on the Rivermead site where you can camp out for several days.
