Ask most people what they think of when you mention
Britain's inland waterways and they will say "canals".
Certainly there are many wonderful boating holidays to
be had on the canal system but also there are boats with
accommodation for hire on rivers, the broads in East
Anglia, the lochs of Scotland, the loughs of Northern
Ireland as well as sea-going craft in coastal resorts.
Each has its own attraction. Novices
are welcome at most boat-hire companies and basic
training in "rules of the road" and boat handling are
provided. On canals and lakes there are no tides to
worry about and usually little in the way of currents
but handling boats on rivers takes a little more skill
and handling boats on the sea is not for someone without
boating experience.
This section covers motor cruisers.
If you are a "sailor" rather than a "boater" then look
in our
Sailing section.
