A modest market town close
to the wild beauty of Cannock Chase, Rugeley
lies on the Trent and Mersey Canal and until
the late 20th century was an
important centre for coal mining. In the 19th
century it hit the headlines when one of its
citizens, the infamous surgeon William Palmer,
was hanged for a poisoning spree.
