Tel: 01433 620638
E-mail:
Lesley@bluejohn.gemsoft.co.uk
The Blue John cavern at Castleton is world
famous. It is home to eight of the fourteen
known varieties of Blue John Stone, a beautiful
and ornamental fluor-spar. The mineral has been
mined here for centuries and continues to be so
in the winter months. The traditional methods of
turning Blue John are still used, and the skill
of our craftsmen working in the Original Blue
John craft shop in the village of Castleton
enable the visitor to view this unique stone at
its best. The Blue John Cavern is steeped in
history and old mining equipment is on view
inside the cavern. Guided tours are conducted
through the cave system at short regular
intervals. Each tour lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour
during which time a series of magnificent
natural water-worn caverns are seen. Blue John
can be seen in it's natural state along with
stalactites, stalagmites and huge caverns. The
trip is a great educational experience for young
and old alike. See the Waterfall Cavern and the
Grand Crystallized Cavern with its
multi-coloured dome. Visit Lord Mulgraves Dining
Room where his Lordship entertained miners, and
where fine veins of Blue John can be seen in
their natural state in the limestone. Stand in
the Variegated Cavern approx. 200 feet high and
30 feet wide.

Coach & Four-in-Hand & Celebration Carriage
Rides thro' the Derbyshire Dales. Make your
wedding day extra special. Arrive in style with
an elegant carriage drawn by two or four of our
beautiful dapple grey horses. First Class Bed &
Breakfast accommodation for you & your horse.
Ideal venue for Groups & Clubs. This unique
collection of vehicles and accessories was
started by Mr. William Smith, who was very
particular about the authenticity and impeccable
condition of each carriage. This tradition is
now continued by his daughter Caroline
Dale-Leech, who has spent her life with horses
and driving, learning from her grandfather as
well as her father. One of the more unusual
aspects of the collection is that it is a
working museum, and the owner ensures that the
vehicles are regularly out on the road being
used not locked away behind closed doors. All
the vehicles have worked regularly in films and
TV. An all year venue as much is under cover.
Visitors are welcome to browse around at their
leisure. If you are lucky, you may see the
blacksmith at work or the staff grooming the
horses and ponies or the staff preparing one of
the wedding carriages for one of the many
wedding this year. School parties and clubs
especially catered for.

Vast area of outstanding
walking country.
The High Peak stretches from the heather-clad
moors of Park Hall to the gritstone of Derwent
Edge, and from the peat bogs of Bleaklow to
the limestone crags of Winnats Pass.
The wild Pennine moorlands are of
international importance for their populations
of breeding birds, including golden plover,
merlin and red grouse.
Sites of particular interest include Mam Tor,
with its spectacular views, landslip and
prehistoric settlement; Odin Mine, one of the
oldest lead mines in Derbyshire; and the
unspoilt valley of Snake Pass. Kinder Scout,
where the Mass Trespass of 1932 took place, is
the highest point for fifty miles around. |

Set on a steep hillside in Derbyshire, the
Chestnut centre is (as far as we know) the only
place in Britain to see Giant Brazilian otters.
The otter enclosures, also including native
British, American river and Asian short-clawed,
are at the bottom of the hill in a very
attractive wooded valley. The enclosures
themselves are all of a good size with room for
the otters but great views for the visitors.
Also down there are red squirrels and a
collection of owls.
