The
administrative headquarters of Monmouthshire,
this was created as a ‘new’ town in 1949 to
provide employment for part of the South Wales
coalfield. It takes in a number of older
villages and is surrounded by hills that rise
to more than 1,000 feet. South of the town
stands a modern abbey on the site of a 12th
century predecessor.
