Visiting Shakespeare's
Stratford-upon-Avon
|
This historic market town situated on the
banks of the River Avon in Warwickshire,
notwithstanding its fame as the birthplace and
final resting place of William Shakespeare,
must surely rank as one of Britain's loveliest
towns.
The name "Stratford" means "street ford". This
derives from Roman times when there was a ford
over the Avon at the point where the road
crossed the river (today this road is the A422
to London).
