Just a short drive from
Telford, Broseley is famous as the one-time centre
of clay pipe manufacture, a heritage celebrated in
the town’s evocative Clay Tobacco Pipe Museum. It
was also the base of ironmaster John Wilkinson,
the man who commissioned the world’s first iron
bridge across the River Severn at Ironbridge. He
also built ‘The Trial’, the world’s first iron
barge, in 1787. Near the town is 16th
century Benthall Hall, run by the National Trust,
which has fine furniture, pottery and paintings. |
