A steep old town once famous
as the country's most important centre for the
manufacture of broad- cloth. It still supplies
most of the world's requirements for
billiard-table cloth and has a flourishing dye
trade.
Its scarlet dyes are world
renowned. Some of the 18th-century woollen mills
witness to this important past. Piano manufacture
is now included in the activities here.
