Museums long ago ceased to be stuffy
rooms full of glass cases containing bits of old pottery
and fossilised bones.
Today even most conventional
museums including displays which change but over recent
years there has been a growth in industrial and "living"
museums.
Here you can learn about local heritage, get a
feel for how people lived and worked, the hardships they
endured...

NANTGARW CHINA WORKS

CF15 7TB

'Visit the
remains of Nantgarw Chinaworks where
William Billengsley made some of the
worlds finest porcelain during the early
years of the nineteenth century.
Following Billingsley, the Pardoe family
made the works one the of the most
successful domestic potteries and pipe
works in Wales'. |
|
 |
Of the three ruined kilns at Nantgarw China Works,
Kiln II has now been faithfully rebuilt. The site
is scheduled as an Ancient Monument and lies 10
miles north of Cardiff. All that remained of the
kiln was the brick base which housed the complex
under-floor flue system. This was archaeologically
dismantled by numbering each and every brick
whilst recording its design and construction.
Following the careful reassembly of the kiln base,
extensive research into kiln construction, and
piecing together archive material, the remainder
of the bottle kiln was designed and painstakingly
reconstructed. This involved devising a way of
constructing a ‘brickwork dome’ which formed the
roof of the oven. The restoration and
reconstruction of the kiln is so successful that
it could be fired and used to once again to make
earthenware and clay tobacco pipes.

Cardiff see our website.
