With
the wild remoteness of high Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, the wooded valleys of Exmoor, the
lush countryside to be found in all four counties and 500 miles of coastline varying from
high cliffs to the finest sandy beaches, it is not surprising that this region has many of
the most popular holiday destination areas of Britain.
With the exception of Bristol and Plymouth, there are no
major cities. The magnificent cathedrals in Exeter, Truro, and Wells make them
cities officially yet they do not have the major conurbations or the vast sprawling
shopping malls that one has come to associate with modern cities. They are much like the
many small and attractive towns, each with its own individual character, that can be
found throughout "The West Country".
