Situated on the western
edge of Salisbury Plain, Westbury is
overlooked by Britain’s oldest white horse
figure etched into a nearby hillside.
Beyond it is the huge Iron Age hill fort known
as Bratton Castle.
The town once had an important woollen
industry and old mills and weavers’ cottages
can still be seen.
Near Bratton Castle is the Ethandun Memorial,
a sarson stone marking a battle in 878AD
between King Alfred and the Danish invader
Guthrum. Alfred was the eventual victor. |
