Museums long ago ceased to be stuffy
rooms full of glass cases containing bits of old pottery
and fossilised bones.
Today even most conventional
museums including displays which change but over recent
years there has been a growth in industrial and "living"
museums.
Here you can learn about local heritage, get a
feel for how people lived and worked, the hardships they
endured...

Alyth Museum is located in the old Boy’s Brigade
Hall and served latterly as a library. Its
collections were originally formed by an
informal group of local people in the 20th
century. In the late 1970s they were transferred
to Perth & Kinross District Council under a
cypres scheme. The collections are particularly
strong in local history, domestic and
agricultural implements and artefacts connected
with life in and around Alyth, mostly in the
19th century. There is also a small display on
local 18th century inventor James Sandy who
developed a concealed hinge for snuffboxes. In
addition he is remembered for making artificial
limbs, false teeth and musical instruments.
Amongst other popular exhibits are a display of
19th Century Staffordshire pottery flatbacks and
the famous Blairgowrie drunks’ cart. This was
used in the 19th century to wheel home those who
had enjoyed too much of the local hospitality!

The building, which stands within the lands of
the old Culdees monastery, dates from the 18th
century. Originally consisting of a byre, stable
and cattle rede, it was renovated during the
1990s to house the Museum. In keeping with the
aim of preserving the building's heritage, some
of the original features, such as the internal
stone walls and an area of cobbled floor, have
been left visible. In addition to mounting
exhibitions, the museum is also collecting
artefacts relating to the history of the parish,
recording the memories of local inhabitants, and
