Scotland’s best kept
secret for over 40 years!
Hidden beneath a
Scottish farmhouse is a tunnel leading to
Scotland’s Secret Bunker. 24,000 square feet of
secret accommodation on two levels, 100 feet
underground to protect Government staff in the
event of a nuclear attack during the Cold War.
|
|
 |
You enter this amazing
underground labyrinth down a 150 metre tunnel,
from the innocent looking farmhouse to the
bunker below into a world behind hermetically
sealed three tons of blast proof doors.
 |
|
After the end of
World War II, we entered a period which
became known as "The Cold War" during which
our relationship with the Warsaw Pact
countries was less than friendly. The
Government's plan was to establish a chain
of early warning radar stations along the
east coast of the UK. Those built in areas
of greatest risk were sited underground.
|
Here at Troywood in
Fife, close to the key enemy targets of the
Royal Navy's Rosyth dockyard and the fighter
aircraft of RAF Leuchars, was one of these.
There were several sizes of bunkers and this is
one of the largest.

This garden has been described as a 'hidden gem'
of Scotland. The garden is divided into several
sections including Water Garden, Heath Garden,
Peat Garden, Rock Garden
Herbaceous, China and Chile Borders.
In the Order Beds, plants from the same
botanical family are grown together to
illustrate the characteristics they share to
demonstrate currently accepted theories about
evolution in flowering plants.
The garden has about 8000 species of ferns,
herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees, some which
are native to Scotland but most grow wild in
other regions of the world.

attractive area, comprising reclaimed coal mining
waste-land, gently rolling grassland and woodland.
It covers an area of 1,200 acres, 260 of which
form Loch Ore.

opportunities for interesting walks. At the west
end of the loch there is a nature reserve with a

This is one of the most popular RSPB nature
reserves in Scotland. The visitor centre
overlooks the loch where pink-footed and greylag
geese, whooper swans and thousands of ducks
spend the winter. The wet grassland is managed
for nesting redshanks, snipe, lapwings and
ducks. One trail leads visitors to hides
overlooking the loch. The second, longer nature
trail guides visitors through woodland to the
view from the top of Vane Hill. A summer walk
often gives views of willow warblers, tree
pipits and perhaps great spotted woodpeckers.
The reserve and visitor centre are closed 25-26
December and 1-2 January. Reserve open at all
other times; visitor centre open daily, 10 am to
5 pm.
