It was Charles l who put this
market town on the map by making it Scotland’s
smallest ‘royal’ burgh. To the southwest is Cairn
Edward Forest, which was named in tribute to
Robert the Bruce’s brother Edward. He held the
fort here while the great warrior Bruce went off
in search of support for his fight for Scottish
independence.
