This market town grew up around the Johnstone
Tower, once the local jail. It is famous for sheep
sales and a lamb fair held since 1680.
More recently, on 21 December 1988, it was the
scene of a horrific plane crash when a Boeing
bound for New York was blown up by a terrorist
bomb.
All 259 passengers were killed together with 11
local people. |
