Museums long ago ceased to be stuffy rooms full of glass cases containing bits of old pottery and fossilised bones.





Today even most conventional museums including displays which change but over recent years there has been a growth in industrial and "living" museums.





Here you can learn about local heritage, get a feel for how people lived and worked, the hardships they endured...

An Iodhlann is a collection about the island of Tiree. It holds 5,000 items - letters, photographs, family trees, books maps and oral history tapes - about the island's history, archaeology and natural history.

Auchindrain is an open air museum consisting of the restored old township of that name along with related domestic and working life collections. The township is presented as around the turn of the last century and offers visitors a fascinating glimpse of the life of the west highlanders at the time.

Experience the archaeology, history and natural history of the Island in the Bute Museum. There is an extensive display of birds and island wildlife, and a wild flower display throughout the summer. Exhibits from early stone tools to Clyde steamers come from every period of Bute's history. There are also paintings and an extensive collection of photographs of old Rothesay.

The  library and museum was originally establish in 1896 by the Kintyre Scientific Association, which is still active today as the Kintyre Antiquarian and Natural History Society.

Castle House Museum, a B-listed building, displays the story of Cowal through geology, archaeology, Celts and clans. There are special displays of Clyde steamers and the Clyde in two World Wars. Four rooms, parlour, kitchen, study and nursery show life in Victorian times. Video area. Full disabled access.

Located on the Island of Easdale, Argyll, the centre of the former Scottish slate industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum is set amid cottages belonging to the quarries and houses a collection of records, photographs and artefacts relating to the industrial and social history and islanders who lived there.
