"Free Traders"
|
Daphne du Maurier used her
beloved Cornwall as a backdrop for several of
her novels, and the sea, and particularly
smuggling, was at the heart of two of them.
While they may have been fiction, they were
rooted in fact, and set in real places.

|
If you visit Helston in
Cornwall and ask one of the locals about the
famous Furry Dance, you're likely to hear the
following story: Satan, for reasons best known
to himself, was flying through the air one
night carrying a huge boulder with which to
block the entrance to Hell.
He was spotted by a keen-eyed St Michael, and
a great battle ensued, during which Satan
dropped his boulder.

Dramatic coastline with views over massive
rock stacks.
This is one of the most popular destinations
on the Cornish coast, because of the
spectacular clifftop view of rocks stretching
into the distance across the sweep of
Bedruthan beach (not NT).
There are magnificent walks along the coast
path between Carnewas and Park Head.
The Trust has rebuilt the cliff staircase down
to the beach, but it is unsafe to bathe at any
time and visitors need to be aware of the risk
of being cut off by the tide. |

Dramatic and historic stretch of Cornish
coast.
The Lizard is the most southerly point of
mainland Britain and the turning point of one
of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
The coastline on either side offers dramatic
cliff walks, masses of rare wild flowers and
fascinating geological features.
The area played a key role in the history of
modern communications. |

Headland with fine views over Falmouth Bay.
At the southernmost tip of the Roseland
peninsula, St. Anthony Head overlooks the
spectacular entrance to one of the world’s
largest natural harbours – Carrick Roads and
the Fal estuary.
The starting point for a number of excellent
coastal and sheltered creekside walks, the
Head also bears newly revealed remains of a
century of defensive fortifications. |

Gorran Haven and The
Dodman
Gorran Haven lies just south of Mevagissey at
the seaward end of a shallow valley. Steep lanes
and passageways climb from the harbour and an
intriguing little chapel built on solid rock
dates from the 15th century. South of Gorran
Haven, the mighty Dodman Point thrusts its
bull's head into the seaway. The Dodman, 114
metres high, an impressive leap from sea-level.
It has a strange, lonely atmosphere and,
although it dominates the coast, its summit is
unspectacular because it is so broad and flat.
In keeping with the scale of the great headland,
the Iron-Age earthworks that enclose the seaward
area of The Dodman are over 609 metres long and
6 metres high. The embankment is known as the
Baulk or Bulwark.
|
|
Gribbin Head (NT)
West of Fowey, is the smooth, green bulk of
Gribbin Head. The headland, always referred to
as The Gribbin, is crowned with the 25-metre
Daymark tower painted in red and white. The
Daymark was erected in 1832 in order to
distinguish The Gribbin from St Anthony's Head
at the entrance to Falmouth Bay. The two
headlands look very similar and sailors had
sometimes mistakenly sought the deep waters of
the Falmouth Estuary in the dangerous shallows
of St Austell Bay, with disastrous results.
|
|
Rame Head
Rame Head is the dramatic western promontory of
the Rame Peninsula, with a well preserved
example of a typical Iron-Age fort. A medieval
chapel and a hermitage once stood here and a
small building survives, its roof mottled with
moss and lichen, its walls rough with age A
warning beacon was once maintained on Rame Head
as an aid to navigation, but tradition speaks of
its more likely use by smugglers.
|
|
Whitsand Bay
The great crescent of Whitsand Bay curves to the
west from Rame Head. The beach is accessible
only at low tide and ways down by steep steps
and pathways are limited. Above Whitsand Bay, in
a crook of the coast road, is Tregantle Fort,
the most westerly of the line of defences that
march from Fort Bovisand on the Devon shore of
Plymouth Sound through a series of surviving
bulwarks. They were built by Lord Palmerston in
the 1860s when instability led to the fear of
French invasion.
