World Music share the limelight with literature,
theatre, dance, children's events and large
outdoor spectaculars. The Salisbury Festival has
a reputation for stunning and delighting
audiences year after year.
The Festival saw three
classic films screened outside with live music,
two wonderful circus's, a full dance programme
and plenty for the children. With over 120
events in two weeks there is always something

Salisbury Racecourse is one of England's oldest
racecourses, racing having taken place at the
picturesque downland course since the 16th
century. Salisbury stages a number of meetings
during the summer months when it successfully
combines high quality racing with a friendly and
enjoyable day out. Accompanied children are
always welcome at Salisbury (where a free crèche
facility is available at many meetings) and,
under the age of 16, are admitted free to all
meetings.

Tithe Barn

This magnificent 14th century Tithe Barn is one
of the largest in England and is open daily,
free of charge. The granary and old cow byres of
the farm have been restored as craft shops,
galleries and tea rooms.

Ancient ceremonial landscape with many
archaeological features.
The Trust owns 850ha (2100 acres) of downland
surrounding the famous monument, including The
Avenue, King Barrows Ridge, Normanton Down
Barrows and the Cursus, variously interpreted
as an ancient racecourse or processional way. |

The Trust is now managing this historic
landscape, which forms approximately one third
of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, to
conserve archaeology, increase access and
balance the needs of modern agricultural
practice with nature conservation.

Recent additions to the Estate include Durrington Walls, and the lesser cursus on
Greenlands Farm.
There are recommended walks and an
archaeological leaflet (£1) obtainable from the

Silbury Hill and West
Kennet Long Barrow

Just south of Avebury, and
generally considered part of the overall
Avebury temple "complex," stands Silbury Hill.
In a county full of prehistoric "mosts,"
Silbury Hill is yet another: The tallest
man-made prehistoric mound in Europe, and one
of the largest in the world.
Rising like a shallow, flat-topped cone from
the fields, it stands 40 meters high and
covers about five acres, with a base 1640 feet
in circumference.

your children to farm animals, you will
enjoy a visit to Farmer Giles Farmstead.
Set in attractive Wiltshire downland,
adjacent to a real working farm where you
can see yester-years milking equipment in
the museum, bottle feed the lambs and
feed the other animals which include
pigs, Shetland ponies, donkeys, sheep and
rabbits. |

There is a Pet's Corner and an adventure
playground with tractors. Walk through the Beech
Belt or take a tractor ride. Enjoy the exhibition
areas, gift shop and licensed restaurant with home
cooked food. Farmer Giles is a venue for all

Arn Hill Nature Reserve

Around a mile from the centre of Warminster and
at 694 feet, Arn Hill is one of the many hills
that form the fringe of Salisbury Plain. The
Reserve's Nature Trail is a 2 mile circular
walk. The chalkland flora, which includes
orchids, attracts many insects and butterflies,
while the woods are a haven for several species
of birds.

Bush Farm consists of 100 acres of grass fields
and 30 acres of old oak woods. Visitors take a
circular tour round the farm and see herds of
bison, wapiti and red deer. There are other
animals and birds to be seen around the
farmyard. There is a gallery of North American
artefacts. Bison meat for sale. Spacious picnic
areas in the woods or by the lakes.

Surrounded by 38 acres of magnificent woodland,
Shearwater Lake is one of the finest waterways
in West Wiltshire. The lake, which is part of
the Longleat Estate was designed in 1791 by
Francis Drake of Bridgwater. It is known for its
fishing and sailing. A 20 mile long cycle route
through the Wylye valley to Salisbury begins
here.

A delightful nature reserve situated at the end
of Warminster Lake Pleasure Gardens consisting
of water meadows and woodland. Its location,
next to the River Were attracts an array of
rarely seen wild flowers and wildlife. The
variety of habitats makes the reserve a special
place worth visiting throughout the year. A
nature trail guide is available.
