This
strangely-named village lies on the equally
curious River Piddle and was transformed into
‘Weatherbury’ by Thomas Hardy when he penned
his pastoral masterpiece ‘Far from the Madding
Crowds’ in the mid-19th century.
Dawnay House, which stands proudly in the
village centre, was the work of the local
vicar, Henry Dawnay, in the late 18th
century and today employs guides dressed in
period costume to discuss its fine décor and
ornaments. |
