One
of Dorset’s most popular tourist haunts,
picturesque Marnhull, near Gillingham, looks
out across the bucolic expanse of Blackmoor
Vale and clearly has ancient origins, owing
its unusual name to the Saxons. Readers of
tragic fiction know it far better as Marlott,
the name given to it by the writer Thomas
Hardy when he needed to fashion a home for his
heroine ‘Tess’ in ‘Tess of the D'Urbervilles’.
Nearby is The Manor House, residence of Henry
VIII’s wife Katherine Parr. |
