WOKING
This large modern conurbation
is surrounded by magnificent countryside and
developed around its railway station. It dates
back at least to the 7th century when it was a
settlement within the kingdom of Wessex.
In the 20th century it was home to the sci-fi
writer H G Wells whose novel ‘The War of the
Worlds’ describes a Martian fleet landing at
Horsell Common - a fictional event marked by an
out-of-this-world statue in the town centre. The
Basingstoke Canal is a paradise for both walkers
and wildlife.
