The highest village in Surrey,
Hindhead lies close to the dramatic Devil’s Punch
Bowl – a deep valley cut into a sandstone ridge –
above which is Gibbet Hill, the site of at least
one notorious hanging. The co-founder of the
National Trust, Sir Robert Hunter, lived in the
village and raised sufficient cash through public
subscription to buy much of Hindhead Common - one
of the organisation's first purchases.
