A former coaching town, Egham
has a special relationship with the River Thames
which flows through it. Much of the land adjacent
to the waterway is preserved by the National
Trust. Locks built in the 19th century also act as
a reminder of the area’s earliest days.
At a meadow in nearby
Runnymede the Magna Carta was signed by King John
anxious to pacify his rebellious barons. A domed
temple commemorates this moment of history while
another memorial remembers the assassination of
President John F Kennedy. A third memorial has
been erected in tribute to airmen killed in the
Second World War.
