Mentioned in the 11th century
Domesday Book, Effingham has a long history and
lies close to stunning Hampton Court Palace.
Its most famous modern
resident was Sir Barnes Wallis, inventor of the
dam-busting bouncing bomb. Apparently he conducted
his early ‘bombing’ experiments in his garden. He
is buried in a local churchyard.
