This old Anglo-Saxon village
near Aylesbury was mentioned in the Domesday Book
and boasts a magnificent Jacobean mansion,
Hartwell House, which is now a well-known hotel.
The French king Louis XVlll lived here for four
years during his exile. Nearby is the ruin of
Hartwell church, designed in the late 18th century
by Henry Keene. It is one of England’s most
revered early Gothic Revival churches. It has an
eight-sided centre and unusual twin towers. |
