Just two miles from the M40 at Junction 2, it's
hard to believe that this deeply rural inn is
only 24 miles by road from central London. Built
in the 17th century, with a massive oak post and
beam bar, it's a splendidly snug spot on a cold
winter's night and delightful when sitting out
with a drink on balmy summer evenings. Bedroom
accommodation is convenient, up-to-date and
thoroughly comfortable. Choose the brasserie or
bar for relaxed, well-priced meals along the
lines of chicken curry or a home made beefburger
with bacon, cheese, chips and salad. If you're
after something more formal, try the atmospheric
dining room, which is prettily decorated with
palms and greenery. Here, the award-winning
French and English cuisine might include seared
salmon with Puy lentil salad and mustard
dressing or pot-roast Barbary duck with braised
baby beets and deep-fried foie gras.

Reached through a cobbled archway, this 18th
century coaching inn has seen generations of
visitors, one of whom is rumoured to still haunt
its corridors. It's a characterful jumble of
whitewashed, timber-framed buildings whose
comfortable and interesting bedrooms have the
uneven floorboards and quirky angles that come
with age. The varied menu should keep everybody
happy. Dishes range from starters or snacks such
as home made soup, grilled goats' cheese or hot
crab pot, through to a wide selection of
home-made main courses. Typical examples include
Cumberland sweet lamb pie, steak and kidney
pudding, beef Wellington and chicken Copenhagen
(breast stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in
bacon). As well as a good choice of well-kept
real ales, don't miss the opportunity to sample
wines imported by the hotel and for sale in the
wine shop across the courtyard. Outside you'll
also find a large garden complete with
children's play area.
