This small town lies at the
head of the sea loch known as Gare Loch, which
extends for about seven miles and is popular with
water-sport enthusiasts. It achieved an ironic
notoriety in 1853 when a local laird, James
Colquhoun, and his keepers tried to prevent
Glaswegian day-trippers from coming ashore from a
paddle steamer on a Sunday. The courts backed his
cause and Sabbath trips were outlawed.
