Close to Stirling,
sporran-making Doune is a former drover’s market
with a bloodthirsty past, as evidenced by its
great 14th century castle. Built by the Duke of
Albany, whose family was slaughtered by James 1,
it held a position of strategic importance,
effectively controlling the route between the
Highlands and the Lowlands. Its gatehouse rises to
a remarkable 95 feet. Curiously it featured in the
movie ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’.
