rooms full of glass cases containing bits of old pottery
and fossilised bones.
Today even most conventional
museums including displays which change but over recent
years there has been a growth in industrial and "living"
museums. Here you can learn about local heritage, get a feel for how people lived
and worked, the hardships they endured...
Galleries listed include not just civic
galleries displaying publicly owned artworks, but also
privately owned galleries with items for sale.

Denny Ship Model
Experiment Tank
Castle Street, Dumbarton, G82 1QS
Tel: 01389 763444 Fax:
01389 743093
For further details please see
website.
The roadside sign pointed to the "Denny Tank
Museum" so, not unreasonably, one would have
expected to find here a collection of Sherman,
Challenger or Centurian tanks and other
wartime relics . . .
|
However, this museum houses something
much more fascinating - the Denny Tank,
or the Denny Ship Model Experiment Tank
to give it its correct title - a long
narrow indoor tank used for testing model
hulls of ships before they were built at
the Denny Brothers Shipyard.
It is the world's oldest working ship
model testing tank allowing designers to
experiment with the shapes of hulls
before completing their designs. |
|
 |
It was constructed in 1882 and the museum now also
displays many test hull models of paddle steamers,
liners and warships.
The tea clipper, "Cutty Sark" is probably the most
famous sailing vessel to emerge from the Denny
Shipyard, although the hull was built across the
river.
This museum provides a wonderful insight into one
of the major industries of Glasgow in years gone
by. The testing tank itself has been fully
restored by the
Scottish Maritime Museum and is well
worth a visit. Disabled access is limited. Please
call for details.

Clyde to find out about the people who live

age?
• Who were the real life X-men?
• How do submarines navigate under water?

The museum is home to M.V. Kyles, the oldest
Clydebuilt vessel still afloat in the U.K. She

Kyles is a rare survivor, a representative of
Clyde shipbuilding dating from the 1870s - a
period of expansion of shipbuilding on the
west coast of Scotland and in Glasgow.
This is an excellent exhibition for school
parties.
