A gift to the town of Stalybridge by John Frederick Cheetham and his wife Beatrice Astley in 1901. Today, the Astley Cheetham Art Collection, bequeathed in 1932, is displayed alongside, gifts and donations from the twentieth century.

Almost 6 million specimens and objects are divided between the Humanities (Anthropology, Archaeology, Archery, Egyptology and Numismatics) and the Natural Sciences (Botany, Mineralogy, Palaeontology, Petrology and Zoology, which includes Entomology). Only a tiny percentage of the collection can be on display, the remaining items are kept in store for use in research, temporary exhibitions and other public programmes.
