Lancashire - Castles, Cathedrals, Monuments,
Stately Homes & Palaces

Since the stone age, man has been creating majestic structures that we still marvel at today.

Whether you are interested in ancient monuments, battlefield sites, re-enactments, Roman and Norman forts and castles, Stately Homes, Country Houses, Historic Cathedrals, Ruined Abbeys etc, this is the page that should give you the information you need.

Here we try to list properties in private ownership but open to the public (even if only occasionally) as well as those in the care of the National Trust or English/Scottish Heritage.

We know that not all the properties in Lancashire are listed.

Please help us make this guide comprehensive by giving details of missing attractions
here.

Lancaster Castle, also known as John O' Gaunt's Castle, dates back to Roman times. It stood as a fortress against the marauding forces of Picts and Scots.

The Rock-Hewn Graves of Heysham

They don't sell nettle beer on Main Street in Heysham any more, but you can still sit on the Brass Beam Scale and get weighed in public, if you're brave enough.

There's a Heritage Centre now in what was once a barn for the 17th century farmhouse next door; an antique shop has opened beyond the pub, but the ancient bric-a-brac shop, selling second hand books and home-made peg bags has merchandise in its window that I'm sure I remember seeing there when I visited as a child.

Apart from the fact that the car park's become pay and display and there are bins for re-cycling your rubbish, not much changes in this quaint little village on the southern coast of Morecambe Bay. That's its charm. More...

"It is written on a wall in Rome that Ribchester was as rich as any town in Christendom."

This is an ancient saying whose origins have been lost in time but may refer to a rough translation of the Latin inscribed on some artefact long since discovered and lost again. More...

Sunderland Point and Samboo's Grave

Going to Sunderland Point is always a bit scary for me.

Just think about the name.

Sunder or asunder means apart and when the tide comes in this tiny village which was once a thriving port is now cut off from the mainland at Overton. More...

Elizabethan house with rich interiors and an important textile collection.

This imposing house, set in tranquil grounds in the heart of urban Lancashire, resembles the great Hardwick Hall and is very probably by the same architect, Robert Smythson.

In the middle of the 19th century Sir Charles Barry was commissioned to restore the house, thereby creating the opulent interiors we see today.

The long gallery is hung with portraits of society figures from the 17th century, some of the paintings being on loan from the National Portrait Gallery.

Several rooms display part of the unparalleled international collection of needlework, lace and costume assembled by the last family member to live here, Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth.

The wooded park and riverside location offer good summer walks.

One of Lancashire’s finest 16th-century buildings.

The spectacular Great Hall has an intricately carved ‘moveable’ wooden screen and dramatic hammer-beam roof.

Evidence suggests that Shakespeare performed in this hall for the owner, Sir Thomas Hesketh, whose family owned Rufford for over 400 years.
