Close to this market town,
where houses are grouped together round a
church with a 15th century tower, is Cowton
Moor, site of the Battle of the Standard in
1138.
At one time the town was
the ‘capital’ of North Yorkshire and during
the 18th and 19th centuries it became famous
for the manufacture of spurs.
The Old Fleece Inn is
part-medieval. |
