The Fusiliers Museum has
its roots back as far as 1929 at the then depot
at Fenham Barracks in Newcastle upon Tyne,
England. It was moved to this location in 1970.
An appeal was launched in 1989 and with the
funds raised the ground floor was refurbished.
In 1994 more money was
raised and the upper two floors were completely
refurbished. The history of the Regiment is told
in chronological order via the use of story
panels and pictures. On the top floor there is a
DVD which runs for about 45 minutes on the
history of the Regiment. There is a small
children's corner with various games for them.
The aim of the museum is not just to show relics
of bygone days, but to highlight the social

daily. 1 Oct to 31 March, 10am - 4pm daily.
Sophisticated water systems and Edwardian
museum. Chesters was one of the series of troop
bases added to Hadrian’s Wall soon after it was
built in ad122-23. It is the best preserved
example of a Roman cavalry fort in Britain. It
seems to have been occupied for nearly three
centuries, with several changes of garrison
during that time. There is much to see on the
ground: the four principal gateways are
well-preserved, the east and west with short
lengths of Hadrian’s Wall adjoining them. The
entire foundation of the headquarters building
is visible with a courtyard, hall, regimental
chapel and strongroom. The military bath house
is extremely well-preserved, with changing room,
latrines and bathing rooms, as is the Roman
bridge abutment on the far bank of the river.
Chesters Museum is home of the Clayton
Collection, which includes many important early
archaeological discoveries relating to the
central sector of Hadrian’s Wall.
