A one-time Viking settlement,
the town prospered after it was linked to
Liverpool, Wigan and Leeds by canals during the
Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century.
However, it was given its name by Viking settlers
and was later referred to in the Domesday Book.
The Beatles knew the place well – they staged some
of their earliest shows at the local town hall. |
