Nestling in the slipstream of Liverpool and Manchester,
Wigan is an unblemished jewel of the north, rich in
tradition and closeted in a delicate vale of glorious
countryside. Most famous for its past as an industrial
hotspot which boasted over 1,000 pit shafts just a century
ago, Wigan has recreated itself as a thriving urban
metropolis. A wealth of sports, leisure and retail
facilities is topped off with The Galleries, an
award-winning market complex to suit all tastes.
The most famous attraction is Wigan Pier on the Leeds and
Liverpool Canal, which includes Opie's Museum of Memories.
This celebration of a glorious history is continued in The
Way We Were, recreating life in 1900, as well as the
heritage and leisure centre which contains the Trencherfield
Mill Engine, the world's largest working mill engine. Wigan
offers the perfect starting point from which to access a
variety of attractions in the north. Both Manchester and
Liverpool fall within 17 miles, while closer Bolton offers
both an aquarium and a unique museum, including fine art and
Egyptian archaeology.
