A traditional village with a
crafts centre and old woollen mills, St John’s
marks each July 5 as the day of the
Tynwald (assembly field) in commemoration of the
oldest continuous parliament in the world. The
ceremony is staged at Tynwald Hill and is attended
by key dignitaries, from the Lieutenant Governor,
members of the House of Keys and the Legislative
Council as well as figures such as Deemster,
Coroner of the Sheading and Captain of the Parish.
The village also boasts an
arboretum, shopping centre, wild flower garden and
Royal Chapel.
