RAVENGLASS

This pretty fishing village boasts one of Lakeland’s greatest attractions, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, which takes visitors on a seven-mile journey with stunning views. It was built in 1875 to carry iron ore from local mines but eventually closed. Then, in 1960, a group of people saw its potential and re-opened it, using narrow-gauge track and miniature steam locos.

At one time Ravenglass, lying on Cumbria’s west coast, was a Roman naval base known as Glannaventa. You can still visit the remains of a Roman fort.

At the foot of Eskdale sits Muncaster Castle, which has Roman foundations, as well as Muncaster Fell where, it is reputed, a shepherd came to the rescue of Henry VI after he became stranded following the Battle of Hexham Levels in 1464.

Ravenglass has a beach and a swathe of sand dunes. They are now an important nature reserve, while nearby Sellafield Visitor Centre offers an insight into nuclear technology.
