Replete with interestingly
narrow, cobbled streets, the village of Hawkshead,
near Ambleside, used to be a key woollen centre
and still retains a sense of the bygone. Poet
William Wordsworth went to grammar school here
(between 1779 and 1787) and his desk, with his
name carved on it, has become a latter-day tourist
attraction.
No visit to Hawkshead would be
complete without a tour of the unique Beatrix
Potter Gallery containing some of the children’s
book writer’s original drawings. On her death she
donated land and a number of local buildings to
the fledgling National Trust.
