South Cheshire - Museums & Art Galleries

Museums long ago ceased to be stuffy rooms full of glass cases containing bits of old pottery and fossilised bones. Today even most conventional museums including displays which change but over recent years there has been a growth in industrial and "living" museums. Here you can learn about local heritage, get a feel for how people lived and worked, the hardships they endured...

Galleries listed include not just civic galleries displaying publicly owned artworks, but also privately owned galleries with items for sale.

Not all the museums and galleries in the South Cheshire area are listed. Please provide details of any we have missed
 here.

Tel/Fax: Mr Andrew Fielding on 01606 41823
Web: www.lionsaltworkstrust.co.uk

Only surviving open-pan saltworks in Britain. In 1842 the Thompson family set up an open pan salt works in Marston that produced fishery salt, common salt and lump salt. The salt was pumped as 'wild brine' from 40m beneath the works and evaporated in the large iron pans. The Lion Salt Works closed in 1986 after the collapse of the West African salt market. The site was purchased by Vale Royal Borough Council to prevent its demolition. A charitable trust has been established and a project is now underway to restore it as a working industrial museum. The site appeared in the BBC 2 series 'Restoration' in 2004. There is a small exhibition centre promoting the work to restore the site and the production process with a shop specialising in salt glazed pottery, table salts and traditional salt kits. Activity days provide demonstrations of brine evaporation in replica Roman salt pans. See the Trust web site for details. Donations welcomed. Groups by prior arrangement.
