The observatory was founded in 1790 by Archbishop Richard Robinson. One of the largest scientific research centre in Northern Ireland and the UK.

Newry Canal Way

The walk follows the towpath of the disused Newry Canal, from Portadown to Newry. Passing 13 lock gates and the villages of Scarva, Poyntzpass and Jerrettspass. Highlights include Moneypenny's Lock, Acton or Shark Lough. There's plenty of wild flowers and wildlife to spot too!

Forestry tracks, grassy tracks, rugged open hillside steep in places some parts boggy. Stiles present. With stunning views of Slieve Gullion, the surrounding ring-dyke, Carlingford Lough and the Mourne Mountains.
